With the Christmas season coming up, many of us will be hosting holiday parties. The combination of eggnog, chestnuts, and good company is one of the best things about this time of year. Often these get-togethers can be busy with lots of people, which can be challenging for people with hearing loss. The most important way to combat background noise at holiday parties is by simply remembering to wear your hearing aids. Your hearing aids can’t help you if they are in a drawer (even if your elf-on-a-shelf put them there). Another good tip is to avoid standing or sitting near sources of background noise. This can include near a music source, near the door, or near your cousin Steve after he’s had a few too many drinks. Make sure to also take advantage of visuals to help with understanding. The ability to see someone’s face when they talk is critical. Enjoy the holidays!
