The Fourth of July is a great time to spend the day with family and friends. It’s a day for hotdogs, swimming pools, and occasionally burning your hand with a sparkler. (Please don’t do that one!) In the excitement of the holiday, it’s easy to forget to protect your hearing. Fireworks, cannons, and other celebrations can be LOUD! Fireworks can reach a decibel level of 150 dB, which is enough to instantly cause permanent hearing damage. As pretty as the fireworks look, nothing is worth taking that risk!
Make sure to use ear protection when setting off or attending fireworks this year. Foam ear plugs from the drug store will do in a pinch, but make sure to insert them all the way into the ear canal. A better option is to use over-the-ear hearing protection, or to have your hearing professional fit you with custom hearing protection. Have a very happy and safe Fourth this year!
